The Story

University of Nairobi’s  innovation centre, CD4lab, is calling on innovators to submit applications to be incubated. They will also be offered assistance to commercialise their products.

The university launched the Africa Technology & Innovation Accelerator (AfTIA) in August. UoN is seeking applicants with innovative solutions around use of technology in finance, agriculture, education, governance and technology in health sector.

Each of the  successful start-up will be offered a seed funding of up to  Sh513,229, specialised startup development training, mentorship from industry and academics, personalised coaching on business development and  links to potential sponsors, partners and customers.

“Though C4DLab has been incubating start-ups for a while now, we officially invite the first cohort to submit applications under the umbrella of AfTIA,” Dr Tonny Omwansa, a lecturer at the School of Computing and Informatics said.

The deadline for the application is set for 30th September.

UoN now joins the list of other Universities such as Strathmore and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) that ARE also running incubation hubs.

The qualification criteria for consideration and admission are that the applicant must have registered their innovation with relevant regulatory agencies, the innovation must not be incubated in another incubator at the same time.

The applicant must provide proof of ownership of the innovation and that the innovation must be original and authentic. Innovation must have a demonstrated potential for commercialization.

All staff and students of the University of Nairobi as well as external applicants, are eligible.

The launch came at a time when the government and academia are teaming up to seek ways of coordinating and streamlining methods of identifying and investing in the talent within the nation for a better economic growth.
