The Story

Entrepreneurs, start-ups and researchers can tap €100,000 in seed funding offered by a University of Malta award.

The Take Off seed fund award (TOSFA), now in its fourth year, seeks to aid entrepreneurs, start-ups and researchers mould their ideas and technologies into investor-ready and market-ready businesses.

Entrepreneurs and start-ups devoted to furthering their ideas for innovative products and services can apply for up to €20,000 in seed funding, while researchers working on ideas developed through University R&D can apply for proof of concept funds.

Successful applicants will receive mentoring and support through Take Off and the Knowledge Transfer Office.

Past editions have seen more than 100 applicants and allowed over 25 projects to get funded, and this year’s funding aims to continue the scheme’s success.

Economy Minister Chris Cardona, Pro-Rector Saviour Zammit, Take Off Business Incubator manager Joseph Bartolo and KTO director Anton Bartolo were on hand to launch this year’s edition of the fund.

Various successful projects presented their progress at the TOSFA launch event, including Tonio Sant, who is developing technology for offshore wind energy storage, and Incredible Web, whose BumALift carpooling application has turned the app into Malta’s number one carpooling platform.
