The Story

Award & Investment Overview

Cascader, a medical technology spinout supported by UCL Ventures, has completed a seed funding round led by Topcon Healthcare to advance artificial intelligence technologies for ophthalmology and oculomics.

The amount of the seed round was not disclosed.

Cascader was formed through a partnership between Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Topcon Healthcare, and UCL Ventures. The company brings together ophthalmology, medical imaging, artificial intelligence, and commercialization capabilities to translate more than a decade of academic and clinical research into products for real-world healthcare use.

The seed financing will support development of Cascader’s first products, expansion of its team, and continued translation of its AI technology into clinical applications. Its initial product focus will be macular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration.

From a university commercialization perspective, Cascader represents a structured translational pathway in which academic research, an NHS clinical environment, university venture support, and an established medical imaging company have been combined around company formation and product development.

Approach & Ecosystem Context

Cascader builds on research conducted by scientists and clinicians at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital.

That research includes work beginning more than a decade ago on AI-enabled ophthalmology and oculomics. In 2016, researchers collaborated with Google DeepMind on applying deep learning to optical coherence tomography imaging. Research published in Nature Medicine in 2018 demonstrated an AI system capable of making referral recommendations across more than 50 sight-threatening conditions at a level reported as comparable to leading experts, while providing clinicians with information about how recommendations were generated.

Cascader provides a commercialization vehicle for translating that research base into clinical products.

The pathway is notable because company formation itself brings together several components that university technologies frequently need to cross the commercialization gap. UCL Ventures contributes venture creation and commercialization capabilities. Moorfields provides specialist ophthalmology and clinical expertise. Topcon Healthcare brings medical imaging and industry capabilities and is now leading the company’s seed financing.

This model goes beyond licensing intellectual property into a standalone startup. It creates a venture around a coordinated academic, clinical, and corporate partnership, potentially providing earlier access to product-development expertise, clinical workflows, imaging infrastructure, and eventual routes to healthcare adoption.

The seed round marks the next de-risking stage. Cascader now needs to convert its research foundation into defined products that can be validated within clinical workflows and ultimately deployed across healthcare settings.

Innovation & Technology

Cascader is developing AI technologies that analyze eye imaging and related data to support diagnosis and management of ophthalmic disease.

Its initial focus is macular disease, including age-related macular degeneration, a major cause of irreversible sight loss. The company intends to develop tools that help clinicians identify disease earlier and support clinical decision-making across the eye care pathway.

The underlying approach draws on optical coherence tomography and AI. OCT produces detailed imaging of structures within the eye, creating datasets that can be analyzed using machine learning to identify patterns associated with disease.

Cascader also plans to expand into oculomics, an emerging field that uses information contained in eye images to generate insights about health beyond ophthalmology.

The company identifies cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases as potential areas where eye imaging combined with AI could contribute additional diagnostic information.

Commercially, this creates two related development pathways. The nearer-term opportunity is AI-enabled ophthalmology focused on defined eye diseases and clinical workflows. The broader opportunity is developing oculomics technologies that use the eye as a source of biomarkers and health information relevant to systemic disease.
