Award & Investment Overview
Dragonfly Advanced Materials, a Newcastle University spinout developing scalable aerogel manufacturing technology, has secured £1 million in combined investment and grant funding to expand production and advance commercial deployment.
The financing consists of a £500,000 investment from Northstar Ventures through the North East Spinout Inspire Fund and a £500,000 grant from Innovate UK’s Investor Partnerships programme.
The North East Spinout Inspire Fund is a £22.5 million university-linked investment fund backed by Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland, and Teesside universities, together with the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority through the North East Fund. Its mandate is to commercialize research and innovation emerging from the region’s five universities.
Dragonfly plans to use the new capital to increase production capacity, expand its sales and development team, and advance joint development programs with industrial partners toward potential licensing agreements. The company is also completing commissioning of a new Northumberland manufacturing facility capable of producing larger material quantities for customer validation and development.
For university commercialization, the milestone is significant because Dragonfly has moved beyond initial company formation and technology development. The current financing is supporting manufacturing scale-up, customer validation, licensing activity, and revenue development, all of which are important de-risking steps for an advanced materials spinout approaching broader market adoption.
Approach & Ecosystem Context
Dragonfly was spun out of Newcastle University in 2020 around patented aerogel manufacturing technology developed through university research.
Its current financing illustrates a layered commercialization pathway involving university venture creation, a regional university-backed spinout fund, private investment management, Innovate UK grant support, manufacturing infrastructure, and industrial partnerships.
The North East Spinout Inspire Fund is particularly relevant from a Mind the GAP perspective. Rather than serving a single institution, the £22.5 million fund brings together five regional universities and public-sector support to create dedicated capital for research-based companies emerging from the North East.
The Dragonfly transaction also combines £500,000 of equity investment with £500,000 from Innovate UK’s Investor Partnerships programme. This blended structure can be particularly important for advanced materials companies because technical scale-up and manufacturing validation often require substantial capital before commercial revenues or traditional venture financing can support continued expansion.
Dragonfly has already expanded its intellectual property portfolio to three patents, increased manufacturing capability, and developed relationships with industrial partners. The new funding therefore addresses a later commercialization gap: producing sufficient material for customer evaluation, converting joint development activity into commercial relationships, and demonstrating a manufacturing model capable of supporting market demand.
Newcastle University also remains connected to the company through its venture creation ecosystem, demonstrating institutional continuity from research development and spinout formation through commercial scale-up.
Innovation & Technology
Dragonfly Advanced Materials is developing a patented manufacturing process designed to reduce the cost and complexity associated with producing aerogels.
Aerogels combine low density with thermal insulation, fire retardancy, and water resistance, creating potential applications across multiple industrial sectors. However, production cost and manufacturing complexity have historically limited wider adoption.
Dragonfly is addressing those constraints through a process-led manufacturing approach designed for greater scalability. Its process also reduces reliance on expensive and environmentally challenging solvents.
The commercial proposition is therefore not based solely on creating another aerogel material. Dragonfly is addressing the manufacturing economics and production barriers that influence whether aerogels can be adopted in higher-volume industrial applications.
The company is progressing final commissioning of its Northumberland manufacturing facility, which will allow it to provide larger quantities of material to customers for validation and development.
This represents an important commercialization milestone for an advanced materials company. Customer qualification frequently requires representative material produced at sufficient scale and consistency. Expanding manufacturing capability allows Dragonfly to move industrial relationships from laboratory evaluation toward joint development, licensing, and potential commercial adoption.
