The annual summit for research institution gap fund and accelerator programs, including proof of concept programs, startup accelerators, and university venture funds

The Story

The University of Colorado Boulder will offer a groundbreaking level of support for seven entrepreneurs looking to commercialize CU Boulder innovations. Embark Deep Tech Startup Creator will provide seven would-be startup founders six months of salary as CU Boulder employees, business training, funding opportunities and access to high-potential inventions developed at the university.

This unique model expands the entrepreneurial playing field by reducing financial barriers and empowering potential startup founders with the tools for success.

Roughly 180 inventions emerge from CU Boulder’s research labs each year. Not all creators want to bring their innovations to market themselves, which results in opportunities for entrepreneurs who are seeking to turn cutting-edge technologies into real-world impact through commercialization.

“The university launched Embark Deep Tech Startup Creator in 2023 to connect aspiring entrepreneurs and inventors in a unique way,” said Marta Zgagacz, senior director at Venture Partners at CU Boulder, its commercialization arm. “We know how challenging it is to start a company. So we’ve created an entrepreneurial ecosystem to identify the most promising university technologies and equip future CEOs with the tools necessary to weather critical moments in the lifecycle of a startup, such as not having an income.”

Selected candidates will explore dozens of the university’s most promising technologies that address health, the environment, industry and more, propose a startup concept, and pitch their vision. Hired startup founders will receive six months of salary as temporary, part-time employees.
