The annual summit for research institution gap fund and accelerator programs, including proof of concept programs, startup accelerators, and university venture funds

The Story

A small company from Stony Brook won $50,000 in seed funding Tuesday in a statewide high-tech startup pitch competition.

Re-Nuble, which was founded in 2011 by Tinia Pinia, is developing a nutrient system that enables farmers to manufacture their own fertilizer using otherwise unusable waste produce.

Held at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany, the inaugural State University of New York Technology Accelerator Fund Most Valuable Pitch competition featured presentations from 10 startups affiliated with a SUNY campus business incubator or accelerator program. Re-Nuble, which is a client of the Clean Energy Business Incubator at Stony Brook University, will apply its award to commercializing its product.

One of the other competitors, Mechanismic, also developed its technology at Stony Brook University. Founded in 2017, the startup is developing a kit called SnappyXO, a robotics and play product for the education market.

Three of the other competitors are associated with Binghamton University, three are with University of Buffalo, one works exclusively with University at Albany, and the tenth competitor developed its technology at both University at Albany and the host school, SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

“This competition is a great example of New Yorkers, particularly our students and faculty, utilizing their talents, skills and entrepreneur spirit to develop the latest cutting edge technology and innovation into valuable products,” SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson said in a statement. “I applaud Re-Nuble on their winning pitch, and will continue to follow the exciting work of each of these 10 up-and-coming companies.”
