The Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship awarded more than $75,000 in funding to Washington University in St. Louis startups through its Global Impact Award and Skandalaris Venture Competition at its annual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Awards ceremony April 19.
The Global Impact Award is given to startups that are scalable, sustainable, for-profit and quick-to-market ventures with a proof of concept for a broad impact. This year’s winners are Armor Medical Inc. and King of the Curve, both of which received $25,000.
- Armor Medical was founded by: Leonid Shmuylovich, an MD-PhD alumnus and an assistant professor at the School of Medicine, Christine O’Brien, an assistant professor at the McKelvey School of Engineering, and Kelsey Mayo. Their product is a wearable sensor that provides early detection of postpartum hemorrhage.
- King of the Curve was founded by: Heath Rutledge-Jukes, a student at the School of Medicine, William Kelly, a postdoctoral researcher, and Andrew Paul McIntosh. The venture offers high-quality test prep for standardized exams including the Medical College Admissions Test, the Physician Associate College Admissions Test, the Dental Admissions Test and the Registered Dietitian Exam.
Additionally, seven student teams received $28,500 in combined funding through the Skandalaris Venture Competition.
