The annual summit for research institution gap fund and accelerator programs, including proof of concept programs, startup accelerators, and university venture funds

The Story

Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre is launching a new early-stage medtech and digital health R&D accelerator programme.

Startups accepted onto the six-month programme will gain access to the centre’s resources to develop their products as well as non-dilutive R&D capital of up to £25,000.

“The centre has seen fantastic outcomes from previous Wellbeing Accelerator cohorts, including millions raised in follow-on funding, NHS adoption, strategic partnerships, international expansion and jobs growth,” said Jason Brannan, deputy director of the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre.

Funding for the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre comes as part of Barclays Eagle Labs’ £1.75m fund-matching scheme for seven regional accelerators.

Both Barclays Eagle Labs and Sheffield Hallam University have match-funded the medtech R&D accelerator.

Paul Scully, the tech minister, said: “Health and wellbeing tech startups in Sheffield are paving the way to breakthroughs in digital health, and we’re excited to be able to help out.”

To date, the Sheffield-based accelerator has had 40 SMEs pass through its doors and is now seeking 12 more for the programme.

The funding provided by Barclays Eagle Labs comes via the Digital Growth Grant, which it secured over previous recipient Tech Nation.

Tech Nation closed in March due to the insurmountable funding gap, but relaunched earlier this month under the ownership of Founders Forum.

Earlier this month Barclays Eagle Labs opened locations in London and Birmingham.
