Rice University’s worldwide student startup competition returned in a big manner to its in-person format, awarding over $2 million in funding and in-kind rewards to more than a dozen winning teams.
The 2022 Rice Business Plan Competition took held on campus from April 7-9, culminating in a luncheon and awards presentation on Saturday at the Marriott Marquis. Rice revealed the 42 student teams contending for the honors earlier this year. Thirty-one universities are represented by the student contestants, three of which are from Europe. Over 400 candidates were whittled down to 42 teams in five categories: energy, cleantech, and sustainability; life sciences and health care solutions; consumer products and services; hard tech; and digital enterprise.
The competition drew over 250 judges, mentors, and investors, and seven finalists were chosen, each getting thousands of dollars in investment money.
