The Auckland University of Technology (AUT) has launched the AUT Innovation Fund, a new initiative aimed at turning academic research into commercial ventures that contribute to New Zealand’s economic growth. The fund was formally launched by Hon Dr Shane Reti, Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology and Minister for Universities, at a gathering of university leaders, AUT Ventures staff and members of the start-up community.
Vice-Chancellor Damon Salesa and AUT Council members hosted the launch, where Dr Reti praised the university’s commitment to innovation and its role in advancing research with practical outcomes. He said the initiative aligns with the Government’s broader Going for Growth plan.
“This fund is exactly the kind of initiative we want to see more of under the Government’s Going for Growth plan. New Zealand needs to back smart ideas, new technology and the people behind them. That’s how we create better jobs, stronger businesses and a more diverse economy.”
He emphasised that universities are not just centres of education but drivers of innovation and welcomed AUT’s efforts to turn research into outputs such as new companies, products and services.
“They’re not just places of teaching and learning – they’re also where innovation happens. That’s why I’m pleased to see this fund focusing on turning research into real-world outcomes, including new companies, products and services.”
