Mind The GAP Initiative

Breakthrough discoveries emerging from research institutions often stall between the point where basic research subsides and where downstream commercialization or investment partners are willing to engage. This structural challenge—often referred to as the innovation “valley of death”—limits the translation of promising discoveries into technologies, startups, and societal impact.

To address this challenge, research institutions have developed gap fund and accelerator programs (GAP) that provide early-stage capital, milestone-driven development support, startup formation assistance, and coordinated ecosystem engagement.

The Mind the GAP initiative is a long-running intelligence effort documenting the structure, evolution, GAP operating across research institutions worldwide. These GAP programs—including translational research funds, proof-of-concept initiatives, startup accelerators, and affiliated venture fund activities—play a critical role in advancing discoveries from research environments into real-world innovation and commercial impact.

Insights generated through the initiative are updated in the Mind the GAP Report and help inform shared intelligence efforts in the Gap Fund and Accelerator Program Community of Action (GAP COA)—a consortium of research institutions collaborating to strengthen gap-stage innovation infrastructure through shared intelligence and coordinated ecosystem engagement.

The Mind the GAP 2025 Report

The Mind the Gap report series synthesizes insights from the broader research initiative, providing a comprehensive view of how research institutions structure and operate gap fund and accelerator programs advancing research-driven innovation.

Drawing on landscape research, program observation, and engagement with institutional leaders across the ecosystem, the report documents evolving approaches to translational funding, proof-of-concept development, startup formation and venture investment, and ecosystem engagement.

The report is widely used by research institutions, program leaders, and ecosystem partners, including corporations, investors, and foundations, seeking to understand, strengthen, and engage gap-stage innovation infrastructure.

Connected to the GAP Community of Action

The Mind the Gap initiative both informs and is informed by the Gap Fund and Accelerator Program Community of Action (GAP COA).

The GAP COA convenes research institution leaders responsible for gap fund and accelerator programs, providing a forum for peer exchange, shared intelligence, and coordinated engagement with aligned commercial, investment, and philanthropic partners.

Insights generated through the Mind the Gap initiative support the Consortium’s work in strengthening gap-stage innovation infrastructure across participating institutions

Share Intelligence

Participants contribute to and draw from collective insight across research institution gap fund and accelerator programs operating at the gap stage. Through structured peer exchange, longitudinal program observation, and focused working sessions, the Consortium surfaces emerging models in capital deployment, startup formation, governance, and commercialization strategy.

The Consortium supports refinement of proof-of-concept, translational research, startup accelerator, and affiliated venture initiatives. Participants examine funding structures, evaluation frameworks, partnership models, and performance indicators to strengthen program durability, institutional positioning, and commercialization impact.

The GAP COA facilitates structured engagement with aligned industry, investment, and philanthropic partners. Through coordinated initiatives, curated introductions, and collective visibility, participants expand external relationships while maintaining institutional control and alignment with program objectives.
