The Story

The University of Texas Medical Branch announced a $25.5 million contribution from the Moody Foundation of Galveston.

The commitment includes $16.5 million to complete the new Jennie Sealy Hospital’s intensive care complex on the university’s island campus. The rest of the contribution will benefit the exploration of research opportunities.

“Through its role in health sciences education, translational research and advanced patient care, UTMB’s new Jennie Sealy Hospital and its research enterprise exemplify the concept of benefiting future generations,” said Frances Moody-Dahlberg, executive director and trustee of The Moody Foundation, in a press release announcing the contribution. “The Moody Foundation is proud to be part of the university’s efforts to ensure a bright future for Galveston, our region and our state.”

The Jennie Seally Hospital construction project totaled approximately $438 million, $270 million of which funded through private philanthropy. The finished facility will include 310 patient rooms, a 28-bed surgery unit and 20 operating suites. It is scheduled to open for patient care in 2016.

The Moody Foundation has provided than $54 million in support for research initiatives and university construction projects, including the Mary Moody Northern Pavilion and Moody Medical Library. For more information on the nonprofit organization, visit www.moodyf.org.
