The Story

The first 2014 funding round for collaborative ventures between Monash and the University of Warwick is now open, with four schemes offering a range of targeted funding opportunities to academic staff and students at both universities.

The Monash Warwick Alliance funding scheme encourages academic staff and current students to collaborate and achieve results beyond those that can be accomplished by each institution individually.

Since 2012, Monash and Warwick have funded 32 projects, initiatives and joint appointments that have facilitated deep collaborations between the two universities.

Monash University’s Dr Sarah McDonald and University of Warwick’s Dr Nicholas Monk were awarded A$45,000 last year from the Alliance Development Scheme to support their virtual classroom project.

Their unit, ‘Forms of Identity’, is taught simultaneously at Monash and Warwick, with students functioning as a true cohort through face-to-face discussions, peer learning and out-of-class engagement via on-line forums.

Dr McDonald, from the Monash Faculty of Arts, said she encouraged academic staff to apply for Alliance funding as it offered unique support for international collaboration.

“The Alliance funding has enabled Dr Monk and myself to successfully deliver an innovative teaching model that will hopefully be replicated by other disciplines as the demand for a global education grows,” Dr McDonald said.

Four funding schemes are available:

  • Alliance Seed Fund: open to academic staff to support mutually beneficial growth in research and teaching excellence at both institutions.
  • Alliance Development Scheme: open to academic staff to develop existing Alliance linkages through staff exchanges or facilitated honorary/joint appointments; and/or project development attached to a clear deliverable.
  • Alliance Major Initiatives Scheme: open to senior academic staff for initiatives that will create world-leading outcomes.
  • Student Led Activity Fund: open to students from undergraduate to PhD level and supports activities that integrate students and transfer knowledge and innovation across institutions.

Applications for all funding schemes in 2014 close on 10 April and 10 November.

Research staff searching for potential collaborators at Monash or Warwick can use Piirus, a free online tool developed by the University of Warwick that links researchers within their field or across disciplines.

Monash academic staff and students should visit the Monash Warwick Alliance intranet site for more information.
