The Story

The LSU Board of Supervisors has selected 18 new ideas to support through its Leverage Innovation for Technology Transfer, or LIFT2, grants. The board funded a total of $999,981.14 in the last fiscal year to provide a bridge over the critical gap between basic research and commercialization for university faculty.

“These modest seed funds from the LSU Board of Supervisors through the LIFT2 grants can make all of the difference between bringing the brilliant ideas that exist on every university campus to fruition. The new ideas and technologies funded here have the potential to change the world,” said LSU Office of Innovation & Technology Commercialization Director Andy Maas.

Since 2014, 150 research projects have received funding. More than $6 million in support has been awarded by the LSU Board of Supervisors through this competitive grant to researchers across all of LSU’s campuses.

The 2020 LIFT2 fund supports the following 18 new ideas and technologies:

  • Electromagnetic depolymerization of waste plastics by James Dorman, LSU Cain Department of Chemical Engineering; Kerry Dooley, LSU Cain Department of Chemical Engineering; Dorin Boldor, LSU AgCenter; and Cristina Sabliov, LSU Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering
  • Image through the dental crown by Jian Xu, LSU Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Natural cleaner to remove chemical residues from spray equipment by Zhijun Liu and Lauren Lazaro, LSU AgCenter
  • Moxonidine is a potential new drug for triple negative breast cancers by Suresh Alahari, LSU Health New Orleans
  • Prophylaxis of Incisional Hernia with Placenta-Derived Tissues by Frank Lau, LSU Health New Orleans
  • Development of peptide mimic of protein S, a physiological anticoagulant for antithrombotic therapy by Rinku Majumder, LSU Health New Orleans
  • Film Coating to Aid in Mechanized Transplanting of Pliable Vegetables by John Pojman, LSU Department of Chemistry and Ted Gauthier and Don Labonte, LSU AgCenter’s School of Plant, Environmental & Soil Sciences
  • MyH.E.A.L.T.H.: Soldier science for everyday use by Tiffany Stewart, Pennington Biomedical Research Center
  • In Situ H2O2 Generation in a Continuous Flow Photoreactor by Kevin McPeak, LSU Cain Department of Chemical Engineering
  • Assessing the potential of using ISGylation as a liquid biopsy biomarker for neurodegenerative diseases by Shyamal Desai, LSU Health New Orleans
  • Omnidirectional shock absorbers for helmets by Geneviève Palardy, Warren Waggenspack and Hunter Gilbert, LSU Mechanical Engineering
  • Development of a smartphone-based biosensor device for detecting SARS-CoV-2 antigens in body using LSPR by Luan Dinh Vu, LSU School of Veterinary Medicine
  • Making learning fun: Developing an interactive cybersecurity game for undergraduate education by Andrew Schwarz, LSU Stephenson Department of Entrepreneurship & Information Systems
  • DeepDrug: Artificial Intelligence for drug discovery by Supratik Mukhopadhyay, LSU Division of Computer Science & Engineering
  • Development of universal 3D scanner using polarization field by Jinwei Ye, LSU Division of Computer Science & Engineering
  • Development of a simple, easy-to-use and convenient smartphone application to determine honey authenticity by Gerard Dumancas, LSU Alexandria’s Department of Chemistry
  • A crossover pilot trial to determine the effects of an LSU patented dietary herbal supplement on quality of life by Prachi Singh and Frank Greenway, Pennington Biomedical Research Center
  • Exploring the applicability of single-well gas-assisted gravity drainage process by Dandina Rao, LSU Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering
