Award & Investment Overview
The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) Innovation and Economic Development Office has announced the inaugural cohort of the Aggie Venture Accelerator (AVA), selecting SinewUS, Pharm to Food, and ThriveSpan Labs as the program’s first participating startups.
Delivered in partnership with The March Group, a thematic venture capital firm, the four-month accelerator provides intensive mentorship, structured entrepreneurial education, strategic guidance, and industry connections to help research-based startups advance toward commercialization and future investment.
While no direct funding amount was disclosed, AVA represents a significant investment in commercialization infrastructure. Rather than supporting individual research projects through grants alone, the program equips founders with the expertise, market validation, and investor connections needed to transform promising university innovations into venture-ready companies.
The inaugural cohort reflects UC Davis’ continued commitment to strengthening the pathway from scientific discovery to company formation while expanding the university’s broader innovation ecosystem.
Approach & Ecosystem Context
The launch of the Aggie Venture Accelerator reflects a broader trend among leading research universities to develop integrated commercialization ecosystems that extend well beyond traditional technology transfer.
AVA combines entrepreneurial education, commercialization mentorship, experienced industry advisors, and investor engagement into a structured venture development program. Over four months, participating founders meet twice weekly with the AVA leadership team, representatives from The March Group, and experienced mentors while progressing through three phases focused on:
- Building strong business foundations
- Reducing technical and market risk
- Preparing companies for fundraising
The program culminates with a Demo Day where participating startups present their technologies and business plans to venture capital firms and angel investors.
From a Mind the GAP perspective, university startup accelerators have become increasingly important commercialization infrastructure because they provide structured support between scientific discovery and private investment. Rather than replacing venture capital, these programs help founders validate technologies, strengthen business models, expand industry networks, and improve investment readiness before engaging downstream investors. As venture capital continues shifting toward later-stage opportunities, university accelerators have become essential components of coordinated GAP strategies that integrate mentorship, ecosystem development, and commercialization support.
The partnership with The March Group also illustrates the growing role of venture firms as active commercialization partners. By engaging founders throughout the accelerator, the firm provides early market perspective and investment insight while strengthening future capital pathways for participating companies.
