The annual summit for research institution gap fund and accelerator programs, including proof of concept programs, startup accelerators, and university venture funds

The Story

Program Overview

Penn State’s Commercialization GAP Fund awarded 12 research teams with $75,000 each to accelerate proof-of-concept technologies toward commercialization.

The program is funded by the Penn State Research Foundation and administered through the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT).

According to Bin Yan, Director of OTT and Associate Vice President for Research:

“Our office works to bridge the gap between promising research and industry adoption. The GAP Fund supports projects at a critical stage of development by incorporating industry perspectives early in the process.”

Since its launch in 2024, the GAP Fund has supported 25 projects, targeting technologies expected to reach commercial licensing or investment readiness within one to three years.

Strategic Relevance for GAP Leaders

Penn State’s GAP Fund demonstrates several best practices increasingly found among high-performing university commercialization programs:

• Industry-informed project selection and review

• Funding focused on commercialization milestones rather than basic research

• Portfolio diversification across multiple technology sectors

• Clear emphasis on licensing, startup formation, and investor readiness

Notably, Penn State continues to position GAP funding as a bridge between federal research support and commercial capital, helping technologies cross what is often the highest-risk stage of development.
