Northwestern University’s N.XT Fund has selected Amino Cosmetic Peptides Inc., AtomoAI Inc., and GoEco Inc. as its newest portfolio companies, providing GAP funding and venture-readiness support to help the research-based startups advance toward commercialization and external investment.
The three companies span regenerative biotechnology, AI-enabled healthcare, and sustainable materials. Two of the three awardees are also resident companies at Northwestern’s Querrey InQbation Lab, known as The Q, which recently welcomed its 25th resident startup.
The N.XT Fund was established specifically to address the financing gap between promising academic discoveries and the technical, market, and commercial proof points required to attract outside capital. Funding amounts for the individual 2026 awardees were not disclosed in the source.
For this cohort, Northwestern has paired capital with a more structured investment-readiness process, extending the program’s role beyond project funding into founder and venture development.
Approach & Ecosystem Context
The N.XT Fund supports activities including critical experiments, pilot projects, regulatory work, and market validation. These are common commercialization milestones that can be difficult to finance through traditional academic research grants but may be necessary before institutional investors or strategic partners are prepared to engage.
Northwestern expanded that model for the 2026 selection process. Applicants submitted pitch decks and commercialization milestones explaining how N.XT funding would advance their companies. Eight finalists then participated in a venture-readiness program that included professional pitch deck development and mentoring from experienced industry leaders.
The process culminated in ten-minute investment pitches, with three companies ultimately selected for funding. Importantly, the five finalists that were not funded still received commercialization support intended to improve their ability to pursue future investment.
From a Mind the GAP perspective, this represents an increasingly important evolution of university GAP programs. Capital alone does not necessarily make an academic startup investment-ready. Pairing milestone funding with investor communication, commercialization planning, market validation, and external mentoring can help companies translate technical progress into the evidence and narrative required for follow-on financing.
Northwestern is also connecting the N.XT Fund with a broader commercialization infrastructure that includes INVO and the Querrey InQbation Lab. Previous N.XT-supported companies including Volexion, Syenex, and NylaNova provide examples of how early university support can precede private financing, federal funding, industry collaboration, and continued technology development.
Innovation & Technology
Amino Cosmetic Peptides Inc.
Amino Cosmetic Peptides is commercializing regenerative peptide technology based on research from Northwestern faculty member Samuel I. Stupp, PhD.
The company is led by former Northwestern doctoral student and Q Entrepreneurial Fellow Doruk Cezan, PhD, alongside Northwestern PhD graduate Anna Metlushko, PhD.
Its regenerative peptide systems are designed to stimulate collagen and elastin production and potentially improve upon conventional topical peptide formulations. The approach combines materials science and regenerative medicine with an initial commercialization focus on scientifically validated skincare products.
Amino has already conducted more than 150 stakeholder interviews with dermatology clinics and professional providers, providing early market evidence that can inform product development, positioning, and commercialization strategy.
AtomoAI Inc.
AtomoAI was founded by Mohamed Abazeed, MD, PhD, Chair of Radiation Oncology at Northwestern Medicine.
The company is developing AI-enabled clinical decision-support technology for radiation oncology. Its lead product, iSeg, automates tumor segmentation during radiation therapy planning.
Tumor segmentation is currently a time-intensive process that requires clinicians to manually identify and outline tumor regions before treatment. AtomoAI is using a large radiation oncology dataset to automate portions of that workflow.
According to Northwestern, the technology has demonstrated physician-level performance while also identifying tumor regions that can be missed or underestimated by human readers.
The commercialization opportunity centers on reducing workflow burden while improving consistency and potentially treatment-planning quality in radiation oncology.
GoEco Inc.
GoEco is commercializing a graphene oxide-based barrier coating for paper and molded-fiber packaging developed from research by Northwestern faculty member Sonbinh T. Nguyen, PhD. The company is led by Tim Wei, PhD.
The technology is intended to replace PFAS-based and petroleum-derived coatings used in food-contact packaging while preserving the recyclability and compostability of the underlying packaging material.
This addresses an important commercialization challenge for sustainable packaging. Barrier performance must be maintained without undermining the environmental advantages of fiber-based materials.
GoEco has begun industry evaluations and is advancing commercialization discussions with potential partners, providing an early pathway for validating performance in customer-relevant environments.
