Two local groups specializing in research and technology will receive nearly $200,000 as part of a group of 38 firms statewide to receive awards totaling over $2.8 million.
Funding from the Commonwealth Research Commercialization Fund is awarded to companies making strides in research in the fields of commercialization, including advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, and energy and life sciences, according to the office of Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
McAuliffe said that the awards help to advance Virginia economically.
“The CRCF program advances research with potential for economic growth in Virginia. In order to compete with other states and globally, we must focus on early stage economic development,” he said. “These investments are planting seeds that are helping us grow the new Virginia economy.”
The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics Systems, in Prince George, is receiving an award of $99,988 for the work of Dr. James Lambert, in the field of energy. Lambert’s research is entitled “Aviation Drop-In Biofuels: Sustainable Supply Chain in Virginia in Support of Farm to Fly 2.0 and State Agricultural/Economic Objectives.”
The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, in Disputanta, is awarded $100,000 for research by Benjamin Zimmerman, in the in field of advanced manufacturing, for the project “High Speed Telemetry for Machining.”
The nonprofit Center for Innovative Technology selects grant recipients by reviewing proposals in six specific areas – Commercialization, Eminent Researcher Recruitment, Facilities Enhancement, Matching Funds, Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Matching Funds and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Matching Funds. These areas support the private sector, academia and nonprofit research institutes across the state.
