The Story

Oregon Health & Science University’s Oregon Clinical & Translational Research Institute Biomedical Innovation Program (BIP) , in coordination with the Department of Technology Transfer & Business Development (TTBD),  takes an integrated approach to identifying, supporting, and accelerating the commercialization of new healthcare technologies. (For more on how OHSU commercializes technology…)

The BIP/TTBD facilitates commercialization through direct project management, inventor education, and external feedback/advisory support. In addition they offer a suite of funding options to nurture promising translational research and proof of concept through the capital ‘valley of death”.  (For more on BIP…)

On of those funding programs, Pilot Project Funding for Translational Research Leading to Biomedical Commercialization invests $60-80K into projects in Track 1: Device, diagnostic, software development and Track 2: Drug Discovery and therapeutics. Principal investigators are expected to put forth proposals that details multidisciplinary partnership and a clear vision of how the project will advance the technology towards application/market use. (For more on funds…)

A recently funded project centers continuous, wearable monitoring for mental health patients, specifically targeted at those at risk for self harm. Mental health disease affects at least 1 in 5 of us. This device provides comfort and e patient with an immediate need for help or support. This device could also  provide cost savings and space (available beds) relief in the healthcare system. (For more on the inventor, David Sheridan…)
