The annual summit for research institution gap fund and accelerator programs, including proof of concept programs, startup accelerators, and university venture funds

The Story

The Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization (MTRAC) Life Sciences Innovation Hub is a pivotal program driving biomedical innovation statewide. By offering both mid-stage and early-stage (Kickstart) funding, the hub bridges the gap between academic research and commercial impact. The latest awards include seven mid-stage projects and five Kickstart grants targeting everything from gene expression modulation and cardiac therapies to advanced screening platforms and digital health apps. With robust support from the Michigan Economic Development Corp., Innovation Partnerships, and the U-M Medical School, MTRAC provides not just capital, but also mentorship and commercialization education, ensuring projects can be transitioned effectively from concept to market. The demonstrated economic impact is immense, producing jobs, new companies, and multimillion-dollar investment returns.

Three Takeaways for Best Practices

•Early and Sustained Funding: Strategic allocation at both the early and mid-stages accelerates innovation, de-risks commercialization, and promotes translational success by supporting proof-of-concept all the way through market readiness.

•Comprehensive Support Ecosystem: Access to experienced mentors, commercialization programming, and feedback from industry professionals is vital for translating biomedical research into impact, supporting both scientific and business development.

•Statewide Collaboration & Oversight: Cross-institutional engagement and expert committee selection ensure funding targets high-potential projects and scalable technologies, leveraging Michigan’s academic strengths to maximize economic and health benefits.
